Rust Sheep Guide: Taming, Wool, Breeding and Genetics
Sheep in Rust are tameable livestock kept for wool, which you sell to the Livestock Vendor or recycle into cloth. Shear one with a knife, hatchet or sickle to get 10 Wool, and the fleece grows back in 5 minutes at OK genes. You don't need to tame a sheep to shear it, but you do to breed sheep and improve their genetics.

What are sheep used for in Rust?
Wool. A tame sheep with OK genes grows 120 wool an hour, which you can trade to the Livestock Vendor for scrap and items or recycle into cloth. Tame sheep also drop dung for Low Grade Fuel.
Sheep came with the Livestock Update on 1 October 2026. They're smaller and more fragile than cows (150 HP against 450), live in bigger groups, and their output is far more tradeable: a herd of decent sheep turns into a steady income at the vendor or a pile of cloth at the recycler.
Like cows, sheep carry five genes. For sheep, the Yield gene is the one that matters most, because it controls both how much wool a fleece gives and how fast it regrows. See livestock genetics for how genes are inherited.
Where to find sheep
Wild sheep spawn in Forest and Tundra biomes in groups of 2–6, on fields, forest edges, roadsides, riversides, lakesides, rail lines and hilltops. They don't spawn in Snow, Desert or Jungle.
Density is about 2 per km². Because they travel in bigger groups than cattle, one find often gives you several animals to tame at once. Once tame, sheep can graze in Desert and Jungle too, so you aren't limited to the biomes they spawn in.
The Livestock Vendor at the Ranch and the Large Barn also sells lambs.
How to get a sheep
- Tame a wild one. About 5 minutes within 20 m. Groups of 2–6 make it efficient to tame several together.
- Buy a lamb for 150 scrap from the Livestock Vendor. Lambs arrive Bonded and on a lead and grow up in about 1 hour.
- Breed them from a tame male and female. This is how you get high-Yield sheep.
Lambs are half the price of calves, which makes sheep the cheaper way into livestock.
How to tame sheep
Stay within 20 m for about 5 minutes without hurting any of them. They go from Known (5s) to Tolerated (30s) to Bonded (5m). Stay 15 minutes for Herd trust, when adult males start defending you.
- Approach the group. Adult males, and mothers with a lamb, will warn you and charge if you get too close. Their headbutt does 35 damage, which hurts at low health.
- Stay within 20 m. After 30 seconds they're Tolerated and stop threatening you.
- Keep waiting to 5 minutes for Bonded. Hurting a sheep costs 60 seconds of trust, hurting another herd member 30 seconds.
- Don't leave early: trust below Bonded fades. Bonded is permanent, and your Tool Cupboard becomes the sheep's home.
Curious sheep trust you twice as fast. A Shepherd's Pie speeds trust up further and makes livestock treat you as at least Tolerated.
| Trust level | Time within 20 m | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Known | 5s | Curious animals follow you |
| Tolerated | 30s | Adult males and mothers stop threatening you |
| Bonded | 5m | Tame: can be led, milked or shorn, uses your Tool Cupboard as its home, grows up, ages, breeds and drops dung |
| Herd | 15m | Adult males defend you (listed for sheep) |
How to lead and move sheep
Once Bonded, a sheep can be led. The lead breaks if it falls more than 7 m behind, so walk slowly and avoid rocks and tight gaps.
A broken lead doesn't undo taming; go back and pick it up again. Build the pen first using the Animal Fence and Animal Gate from the update.
What do sheep eat?
Sheep graze grass and forest ground and eat food from a Hitch & Trough within 25 m. Trough food only fills them to 80%. They drink from rivers, lakes or water containers.
A grazed patch (5 m) is overgrazed for 30 minutes after 2 grazes, so a big flock in a small pen will strip it. Top up the trough with potatoes, bread, corn, wheat or pumpkins.
| Trough food | Calories | Fullness per item |
|---|---|---|
| Brioche Bread | 190 | 45.6% |
| Bread Loaf | 150 | 36% |
| Potato | 125 | 30% |
| Pumpkin | 80 | 19.2% |
| Corn | 75 | 18% |
| Wheat | 75 | 18% |
| Granola Bar | 60 | 14.4% |
| Black Raspberries | 40 | 9.6% |
| Apple | 30 | 7.2% |
| Blueberries | 30 | 7.2% |
| Any berry (black, blue, green, red, white, yellow) | 5 | 1.2% |
| Honeycomb | 5 | 1.2% |
| Grub | 3 | 0.7% |
| Worm | 1 | 0.2% |
Water
Fresh water 0.05–0.5 m deep at rivers and lakes, or a container: Hitch & Trough, Water Barrel, Small Water Catcher, Large Water Catcher, Water Purifier, Powered Water Purifier, Water Pump, Paddling Pool, Above Ground Pool. Up to 200 ml per drink.
Sheep needs and condition
Condition follows the lowest of food, water and space. Tame sheep can die of neglect; wild ones never drop below 50%.
| Need | How to meet it |
|---|---|
| Food | Grazing plus a trough within 25 m (fills to 80%). |
| Water | Rivers, lakes or a water container. |
| Space | Comfortable with up to 8 herd mates within 20 m, crowded at 12. |
Sheep come in bigger groups than cattle, so space is the need you'll hit first. Past 8 neighbours within 20 m they start to feel crowded. Split a big flock across two pens.
How to get wool
Hit a sheep with a knife, hatchet, Salvaged Axe or Sickle. Each hit takes one quarter of the fleece and does no damage. A full fleece gives 10 Wool at OK genes and regrows in 5 minutes.
Which sheep can be shorn?
Wild and tame adult sheep. Shearing a wild sheep spooks it, but you don't have to tame it first. That's a quick source of wool on the way somewhere. Game data doesn't say lambs can be shorn.
Tools that shear
Salvaged Axe, Hatchet, Bone Knife, Butcher Knife, Combat Knife, Skinning Knife, Sickle, Vampire Stake. Shearing costs tool condition but does no damage to the sheep. Hitting a sheep with any other weapon hurts it, and costs you trust if it's tame.
Yield and regrow time
| Yield gene | Wool per full fleece | Regrow time | Wool per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bad | 6 | 8m 20s | 43.2 |
| OK | 10 | 5m | 120 |
| Good | 16 | 3m 7s | 307.2 |
A Good-Yield sheep makes 307.2 wool an hour, about 2.6× an OK sheep. One Good sheep out-produces two and a half OK ones while eating and crowding like one.
Killing for wool
Killing a sheep before it is shorn adds up to 16 Wool to its corpse (6–16). Shearing is far better: a living sheep keeps producing.
Why isn't my sheep growing wool?
- You sheared it recently: wait out the regrow time (5m at OK, 8m 20s at Bad).
- It's a lamb. Let it grow up (about 1 hour while tame).
What is wool used for?
Selling to the Livestock Vendor, who pays in scrap and items, or recycling into Cloth. Wool has no crafting recipes of its own.
Selling wool
Carry at least 100 Wool to the Livestock Vendor. The offer grows with the amount you bring, and like animal sales you get up to 3 offers before he refuses your wool for 15 minutes.
Using the 1,000 figure (1,000 Wool for about 450 scrap of value): one OK sheep grows a full lot in about 8h 20m; a Good-Yield sheep in about 3h 15m. Offers are paid in a random mix that can include metal fragments, ammo, gun bodies and keycards.
Recycling wool into cloth
| Recycler | Cloth per Wool |
|---|---|
| Green Recycler (powered) | 3 Cloth |
| Red Recycler | 3 Cloth + 75% chance of 1 more |
| Green Recycler | 2 Cloth + 50% chance of 1 more |
| Yellow Recycler | 2 Cloth |
At OK Yield one sheep's 120 wool an hour is roughly 240–360 cloth an hour, which is a lot of cloth without farming hemp.
Sheep genetics
Sheep have the same five genes as cows: Dung, Longevity, Yield, Fertility and Hardiness. Each has two copies rated Bad, OK or Good, and the sheep uses the better one. For sheep, Yield controls wool.
What each rating does to a sheep. The genetics guide covers inheritance and inbreeding, and the gene reader shows these numbers for a specific sheep.
| Effect | Bad | OK | Good | Inbred OK |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dung: one drop every | 16m 40s | 10m | 6m 15s | 12m 30s |
| Dung per hour | 3.6 | 6 | 9.6 | 4.8 |
| Longevity: adult lifespan | 31h 12m | 48h | 72h | 39h 36m |
| Yield: wool per full shear | 6 | 10 | 16 | 8 |
| Yield: fleece regrow time | 8m 20s | 5m | 3m 7s | 6m 15s |
| Yield: wool per hour | 43.2 | 120 | 307.2 | 76.8 |
| Fertility: female cooldown after giving birth | 1h 41m | 1h 6m | 41m 15s | 1h 20m |
| Fertility: male breeding cooldown | 15m 23s | 10m | 6m 15s | 12m 7s |
| Fertility: young per birth | 1 | 1 | 1–2 (60% chance of twins) | 1 |
| Hardiness: lowest need level for full condition | 71% | 50% | 33% | 59% |
Best sheep genes
For wool, Yield first. Good Yield raises wool from 120 to 307.2 an hour. Then Hardiness, so the flock stays productive while you're offline.
| Your goal | Prioritise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wool | Yield, then Hardiness | 16 wool per fleece every 3m 7s instead of 10 every 5m. |
| Breeding | Fertility, then Yield | Shorter cooldowns (41m 15s for the mother) and a chance of twin lambs. |
| Selling sheep | All-round Good, farm-bred | Bred sheep with good genes get the best offers (about 436 scrap of value). |
| Long life | Longevity | 72h instead of 48h before old age. |
| Low Grade Fuel | Dung | 9.6 dung/hour vs 6. |
A sheep with one Good and one Bad Yield copy shears like a Good/Good sheep, but half its lambs inherit the Bad copy. Keep Good/Good animals for breeding.
How to breed sheep
Keep a tame male and a tame female adult sheep together. Pregnancy lasts 10 minutes. The mother's cooldown is about 1h 6m and the male's 10m at OK Fertility.
- Both must be Bonded and fully grown.
- You need one male and one female. In game both are called "Sheep", so make sure you really have one of each.
- Lambs get one random copy of each gene from each parent, and their mother's bonded players and home.
| Fertility | Mother cooldown | Male cooldown | Lambs per birth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bad | 1h 41m | 15m 23s | 1 |
| OK | 1h 6m | 10m | 1 |
| Good | 41m 15s | 6m 15s | 1–2 (60% chance of twins) |
Plan pairings with the breeding calculator and keep related sheep apart: inbred lambs show weaker genes.
Why won't my sheep breed?
- Two of the same sex. Easy to miss when every adult is just called "Sheep".
- One isn't Bonded yet or is still a lamb.
- The female is pregnant or on cooldown, or the male is on cooldown.
Rams, ewes and lambs
In game every adult is just called a Sheep, male or female, and the young is a Lamb. Ram (male) and ewe (female) are real-world words; the game does not use them.
| Real-world word | Meaning | In Rust |
|---|---|---|
| Ram | Adult male sheep | Sheep (male) |
| Ewe | Adult female sheep | Sheep (female) |
| Lamb | Young sheep | Lamb |
Males and females share the same stats: 150 HP and a 35-damage headbutt. Adult males defend you once the herd reaches Herd trust (15 minutes nearby).
Lambs
A lamb is a young sheep, male or female (50/50). It grows up in about 1 hour while tame; wild lambs never grow. Lambs give nothing when harvested.
Get lambs by breeding, taming a wild one, or buying from the Livestock Vendor for 150 scrap. Vendor lambs count as wild when you sell them later. Lambs are passive and flee; their mothers aren't.
How to sell sheep
Lead a healthy, non-pregnant adult sheep into the pen next to the Livestock Vendor at the Ranch or Large Barn. You get up to 3 offers; reject all three and he won't take that sheep for 15 minutes.
- Only adult animals that are not pregnant can be sold.
- Lead the animal into the pen next to the vendor. He lists at most 4 animals at a time.
- Each animal gets up to 3 offers. Rejecting one shows the next. Reject all three and he refuses that animal for 15 minutes.
- Offers are paid in a mix of items and scrap, picked at random up to the offer value.
- About 5% of offers are generous, adding 10–25% extra value.
| Animal | Wild, OK genes | Wild, Good genes | Bred, OK genes | Bred, Good genes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sheep | 224 scrap | 349 scrap | 280 scrap | 436 scrap |
A sheep sells for far less than a cow (about 436 scrap at best against 700), so a productive sheep is usually worth more kept and shorn. Sell the ones with poor Yield.
Sheep resources
| Resource | How | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Wool | Shear an adult sheep (wild or tame) | 10 per fleece, regrows in 5m (OK Yield) |
| Dung | Dropped by tame sheep that aren't starving | 1 every 10m (OK Dung) |
| Raw Mutton, Leather, Bone, Fat, Cloth | Harvest a dead adult | See below |
| Wool from a corpse | Kill an unshorn sheep | 6–16 |
Harvest yields
| Item | From one adult (Skinning Knife) |
|---|---|
| Bone Fragments | ×50 |
| Animal Fat | ×20 |
| Leather | ×20 |
| Raw Mutton | ×12 |
| Cloth | ×10 |
| Head Bag | ×1 |
Other knives, hatchets and the Salvaged Axe give the same amounts (minus the Head Bag) but slower. Unshorn sheep also drop up to 16 Wool.
Are sheep worth it?
Yes, especially for small groups and solos. Lambs cost half as much as calves, wool converts straight into scrap value or cloth, and you can shear wild sheep without any setup at all.
- Income: by the game-data figure, a Good-Yield sheep grows roughly 450 scrap of wool value every 3h 15m.
- Cloth: recycling makes sheep a hemp-free cloth source.
- Fragile: 150 HP each, and flocks need more space. Protect the pen.
- Selling the animal itself pays less than cows, so keep good sheep and sell weak ones.
Cows suit you better if you want milk for teas, more meat and leather per kill, or higher sale prices. Many bases keep both: a couple of cows for milk and a flock of sheep for wool.
